Sunday at Perth Craft Show

I did end up going to the Perth Craft Show on Sunday, & had a lovely day out...
Having had a look around at the stalls & demonstrations, I was heading towards the quilt exhibition, but look what I was about to walk right right past to get to it...
... this amazing exhibit of 1950s style dresses... why so amazing?...
every dress of the dozen or so on display was made by students from a school in Perth, who have barely if ever sewn before, or done screen printing or applique....
The students are in Year 10, making them about 15 years old... & the dresses were created as part of an Art project. They were given the basic dress pattern & fabric colours of their choice. They were also given basic instruction in using a sewing machine, how to screen print & how to applique... the rest of if was their own figuring out.... & applying their own ideas...
I cannot tell you how amazing each dress was... the standard of every aspect of production was outstanding... very neat stitching, creative use of the screen printing & the most amazing applique.
I don't know how this effect is created, but almost every dress featured this effect, like the student has sewn their own lace. I don't want to bore with lots of pics, but I did want to show the top one, which was awarded Best In Show. The flower applique on the bodice front is very detailed, it is about 3 layers of fabrics each one revealing different colours to add to the look.
The other dress was awarded Highly Commended. Really every one of the dresses in this display was just amazing, & provided for me the highlight of my day.

Recognise these ladies?! It's a wall hanging...
Now on to the Quilt display... as usual a feast for the eyes... it was a very relaxed atmosphere & many of the quilt owners were there, chatting & answering questions about their creation. I took a lot of pics here too, every quilt so lovely to look at... it was great that so many of them had a little card explaining them too, giving a little bit of background about their inspiration or maker...

It felt to me that one lady must have read my recent post, because she asked me what sort of quilts I make, when I told here that I'm not a quilt maker, she laughed & said "Oh you have the look of admiration for these, I think you will go the dark side sooner or later!"... (?!?!)

Here is an image for the hexy-lovers... yep, 3/4inch hexys... this quilt would easily cover a king size bed...

This show was very different to the big Craft & Quilt Fairs... nowhere as big... more local or WA businesses... lots of ready made things for sale... lots of demo's you could just sit down for & not have to book in... but still, lots of great stuff to buy for whatever your craft interest might be...

Of course I was armed with my list, & here is my arm-breaking haul of purchases...
I can read your mind, & YES THAT IS IT! The list was longer but the items were not to be found...
(And I didn't buy Petit Noel, Mum bought it for me... for $10!)

It was a great day out & I'm glad I went

What a nice day out...those dresses are amazing, what talent...ha ha you are so meant to come to the dark side!!!...snap! I bought Petit Noel at the show here a couple of weeks ago, it was one of only three small things that came home with me - along with a sock knitting book and some fabric glue refills - but for $10 it was too much of a bargain to miss, enjoy.
