SSCS, Fiddly Binding & Quirks...

My Secret Santa Christmas Swap parcel has arrived to its destination, Arizona USA...
My recipient is Gracie; she has a friendly & welcoming blog Needles Pins & Dragonflies.
Gracie is a wonderful cross stitcher & beader. Do yourself a favour & go see her delicate work.
She has posted a pic of the Christmas decoration I sent her...

Now to the 'fiddly binding'... I had this seemingly brilliant idea of making scrappy bind for the QOFF, but what a chore it's been, sewing those strips together to achieve about 170 inches of binding! UGH...
But it's done now, torture over...
Let's just say I won't be in a hurry to make scrappy binding again any time soon... but now I look at it, I'm happy I did it...

Quirks... I am going to share one of mine.. One of my most satisfying sights in my sewing is a spool of thread that is almost finished... it makes me think of all the great things I've made with that thread...
... and when it's completely empty, I put him here with his mates... (in my world, machine thread is always a 'he', another quirk)
... yes, there are more than 80! I have kept every single empty spool I ever created... not sure why, or what I will do with them, I just do... no wonder my Sewing Space is so cluttered!
What sewing/crafting QUIRKS do you have?

I keep my reels too, and I don't know why. They aren't nearly as beautiful as the old wooden ones. Maybe one day someone will need them for threading practice! My quirk is that I never leave the house without a thimble in my pocket or bag......even if I have no sewing! Now don't tell anyone.

No reel keeping....not sure what mine is but I am sure there would be one...LOL

My empty spools are given to the cat, who batts them around our tiled floors for ages.

Wonder what she thinks they are.

I throw my reels out. Now if the were wooden i'd be keeping them. Love the decoration you sent Gracie. Hugs,

Haha, Anthea, your "fiddly binding" reminded me of my old high school English teacher, Mrs. Hawkins, who had a favorite expression...."fiddle dee dee"! Can't wait to see the binding on the QOFF. Yes, I save my empty spools too....seems like there should be something creative we can do with them! And now on my way to Gracie's blog to see your ornament. :)

That's a lot of binding, Anthea, and it looks nice. I save the odd spool just in case it's needed for something else ... yours make for an interesting collection.

Your scrappy binding was worth the effort....love the idea that you keep spools, not sure what mine is...I dont usually leave the house without some stitching, although I dont always do it, nice to know if I have to wait somewhere; I have some sewing to do

Funny, I was only thinking last week - as the reel of thread was finsihed - "Isnt that great - think of all the sewing I have done to use all that thread...". Quirky?? me?? - nah - no way.
Any grandchildren? - they would make great necklaces with soemething to thread through them...or just good practice for fine motor skills.

I usually save the reels until there are about 12 and then I clear them - I used to give them to my nieces day care centre, not sure what they did with them but they were always happy to have them.

Enjoy your spools.

Hi Anthea - I must admit to treasuring a few wooden spools and some of the ends on the plastic ones make great stamp blocks, but otherwise, no. There is a really easy way to make scrappy binding - I will send you the instructions.

Your scrappy binding will be worth all the hard work. I was trying to think of a quirk but haven't come up with anything yet. You could always just hand stitch a scrap of fabric around each of your reels and jumble them into a bowl or vase as a display.

LOL that is a quirky quirk. I do keep my Mums old wooden ones, but the plastic ones just get binned. Not sure if I have a sewing quirk or not, will have to give that some thought.....
