"Cake & Candles" Giveaway

I don't like to make too much fuss of my own Birthday, but last year I had such fun doing a Giveaway, I decided to make it an annual thing... kinda like a Birthday...

So, welcome to my second annual "Cake & Candles" Giveaway...
The booty this year is one of the fab crochet-print bags I made recently (did anyone pick up my hint in the earlier post?)... a compact tape measure for your handbag (I wouldn't be without mine!) plus a skein of the very pretty variegated thread I cross-stitched with recently & some co-ordinating ones.

Here's a Birthday funny for you... in my family there are a few Birthdays in September & October... so one year when we were all together (which was rare) my Mum made one of her legendary super-big cakes & proceeded to adorn it with candles to exactly match the combined ages of the Birthday people...
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SIX!
When the time was right, Mum & Dad set to, & started lighting as many candles as they could, only to have the whole darn cake erupt into what my MIL proclaimed to be a 'conflagration'...
The flames were at least a foot high & the molten candle wax rapidly entombed the cake, rendering it completely inedible!
Barely a birthday goes by in our family since then, without reference to that poor cake!!

To enter, just leave a Comment on this post...
And just for fun, tell me about a Birthday plan that hasn't gone quite right.
(If you don't have a disaster story, you can still enter)
I will announce a winner here on Saturday, & yes it's open internationally!

Happy Birthday! Oh my gosh that must've been quite the cake! :-) Our youngest DS's b-day is in December. One year the party we planned had to be cancelled at the very last minute.. the place called to tell us it was closing as it was starting to snow. The prediction was for very little snow, but any excuse...etc. Anyway we had to call his friends and have them meet us at the local McD's~ they were so nice! Gave the kids a little tour and made a real big deal for his 6th birthday. :-)

Happy Birthday Anthea! I hope you have a great day.
It was my daughter's 16th birthday yesterday and she managed to blow out all of the candles in one very quick blow, which was very impressive.
I love the granny square fabric.

Many happy returns Anthea. Wow, glad the flames didn't take hold elsewhere. Lots of cakes have not gone to plan for my kids theme birthdays but thankfully mermaids that looked like spooked fish are still edible. Enjoy your day. Sharyn:)

Happy Happy Birthday Anthea! Love your candle story. For one of my daughter's birthday parties we decided to have a pinata. We filled it with all sorts of gifts and candies but no matter how hard the kids hit it - it didn't open. My DH took a bat to it...and still no luck...he finally cut it open with a knife and dumped it out on the floor.

Happy Birthday!! On my Mom's 40th birthday, she came home from work and I had baked her a cake. I joked that I hadn't put candles on it because the Fire Department was unable to be on stand-by. She acted offended by my statement, so while she was in changing clothes, my Dad put 40 candles on the cake, and was roasting a hotdog over them when she came back into the kitchen. It was hilarious!

Happy birthday Anthea, may it bring you an abundance of all good things. I had a very sad and frustrating birthday one year. I stayed in bed longer than usual hoping my children would come in with a pressie for me but they forgit. I git up to feed my cats and couldn't find one of them Upon looking everywhere I found him dead in the laundry sink of all places. I was so distraught and crying that I didn't hear a delivery if lovely flowers arrive from my hubby. We had planned to go out for lunch with my parents and had booked the restaurant a couple of weeks prior. I decided not to cancel it
so we went there onky to find it closed. The cleaner answered the door told us it wasn't open for the day so we ended up finding a small cafe. Every birthday keeps reminding me of that day. We never found out why my beautiful cat died.

What a lovely story Anthea. Happy Birthday to you.
As for my story - it was my 21st birthday celebrated in Essex (I am an Aussie & we were travelling). I couldn't tell anyone I was turning 21 as I had lied about my age to get higher, adult wages, so it was just us and a couple of travelling mates for dinner at our place. I was cooking turkey (first time ever) and in taking it out of the oven to check, the whole lot, fat, turkey, vegies landed all over me and the floor. I can look back at it and laugh, but it was a monumental disaster at the time, and could have caused a serious burn. Cant remember what we ate in the end - probably the rescued turkey, as we were penniless.

Happy birthday Anthea. Lucky it wasn't a total fire ban day with all those candles! One year we had to cancel Mitchell's birthday party. Earlier in the week, Noel had jumped off the back of a truck and hurt his leg. But being a man, he didn't go to the doctors but kept hobbling around. When he finally went 3 days later, it turned out he had torn his achilles. He sheepishly rang me to ask me to bring a bag as he had to go to hospital. But as he had been on his leg, it was too swollen to operate. It wasn't going to be done until Sunday, the day of Mitchell's party! So poor little Mitchell missed out!

did your mum have a fire permit for all those candles!
no funny birthday story for me, maybe I should make a bit more effort lol
A very happy birthday to you and a big hug too.

Happy Birthday Anthea - I am a bit late, sorry. Our best birthday story is when we went to a friends 80th. His children covered a (spare) cake with those candles that you can not blow out! His face was even redder than usual as he tried to blow it out!

Happy birthday - I'm still trying to work out who would have 176 candles, let alone what it would look like on a cake!

LOL maybe in hind sight it should have just been the numbers instead of that many individual candles :-) Such a lovely give away Anthea. My disastrous Birthday story - the year Kate turned 2, we were have a BBQ at night with 20 family friends, My Mum came down from Rocky and we were having a wonderful day prepping for the party, Stephen's Nan lived in a retirement village about 20 mins from our place so we collected her for the day (she wasn't staying for the BBQ), so after lunch Stephen was to take her home and he said to me - how about you take Nan home so I can finish putting up the decorations, it was a horrid rainy day and I HATE driving in the rain, so in the car was Nan, our friend/next door neighbour, Kate and myself, we first dropped into Woolies and collected the Birthday cake and then proceeded to take Nan home, a car was out of control on opposite side of road and come into our path and we had a head on accident, OMG I will never ever forget the noise, it was horrific, anyway the story goes on and on BUT we all ended up in hospital for hours and hours and the people that came to celebrate Kate's 2nd Birthday had come and gone by the time we got home. Stephen's Nan died one week later from internal injuries, this is when we found out about Kate's Mitral valve leakage and she had open heart surgery 2-1/2 years later. So there was a negative and a positive to the day, as if not for the accident we might not have found out about Kate's heart so early and she may not have been with us today.....

Happy birthday Anthea! My birthday is in August and one year I was baking and had put a cake in the oven and thought I should prepare for the next one so started to melt the butter for it, completely forgot about it and since it was a beautiful day I went outside to sit in the sun. The door was open and I could smell the cake and thought - no it can't be reday yet - but when I turned around there was a lot of black smoke coming my way!! The butter was on fire! I put a lid on the pan and found out that the kitchen fan had melted and looked like a drop. Luckily nothing else started to burn. Not my best birthday!
